Peanut Butter Eggs: Reese’s vs Palmer

Chocolate and peanut butter, great in any form and in this season it can be found sold in an egg shape.
Of course Reese’s uses their top selling product and easily transforms it for Easter. Following their lead, Palmer has created their own version. Palmer seems to be “inspired” by almost everyone, like the Weird Al Yankovic of the candy industry.

Reese’s:
We were a little surprised that the egg shape of these were rather poorly formed, it was more like an uneven blob. When we tasted this, I found the PB to me moist and flavorful, the chocolate was a little overpowered by the PB but in general I felt this was just as satisfying as the cups. Ethan felt the PB was kind of airy and didn’t think it was as dense as a regular PB cup.

Palmer:
This had a more solid egg form, like it was filled in a mold and the chocolate was harder so it had a better presentation. This smelled like a Little Debbie Nutty Bar but had a slightly burnt taste. I’m not sure if it came from the PB or the chocolate but it may have been the chocolate because Ethan doesn’t like coffee and he said the chocolate had a coffee tasting undertone.

Wrap up:
In the end the Reese’s was more satisfying. I liked the rich peanut butter and softer chocolate coating. The Palmer egg is better for looks though and maybe a bigger hit with kids because there it also has a “silly” face imprinted on the top of the shell. Some may like the coffee/burnt taste. I didn’t think it was terrible but if I had a choice I’d stick with Reese’s.

  1. I’ve seen the Palmer version in stores, but I’ve never picked one up. I just figured that there was no way it could measure up to the perfection of the Reese’s Peanut Butter Egg. It looks like my instincts were correct! Some people say the amount of peanut butter in these eggs overpowers the chocolate and well…they’re right. That’s kind of a plus for me though. I always feel like more is more when it comes to Reese’s peanut butter. In fact, my all-time favorite Reese’s product is the king-sized version of these eggs. I hope to stock up on them at the after-Easter sales!

  2. Absolutely agree with Heather! The King-Sized versions are the best. Reese’s knows what they’re doing in the PB department.

  3. There is something special about the Reese’s eggs. Maybe it’s the proportion of chocolate to PB, but I like them much better then the regular cups. And there’s a nice saltiness to them.

  4. Be aware that there are 2 diff kind of Resse eggs…
To tell the diff, look at the label. In the kind made with milk chocolate, the word “Milk Chocolate” will appear above the word Resse’s. If its made with the new, less tasty fake milk chocolate, those words will be missing, as they are in the picture above.
Buyer beware of less than perfect Reese’s!
I read this on another Candy blog..http://www.typetive.com/candyblog/category/reeses/

  5. Ah, there’s always someone who can find some edits to make! Rest assured it’s fixed.

  6. I don’t bother with any kind of peanut butter/chocolate bars these days. I spread some peanut butter on a chunk of good milk chocolate and let it melt in my mouth.

  7. Definitely for the Reeses. I’ve tried Palmer myself and I cannot always stand that burnt taste myself. I’m also a big fan of the peanut butter taste Reeses has. It’s a childhood thing. ?

  8. I anxiously await Easter EVERY year just to get my hands on the Reese’s peanut butter egg… I’m frikken serious, too! It’s all about the “RATIO”… the amount of chocolate to peanut butter. The Reese’s egg is perfect… the mini cups have way too little peanut butter, the regular cups have too stiff of chocolate…. the eggs have soft molded chocolate that melts WAY easier, and the peanut butter is soft and to die for…. PALMERS is a disgrace to chocolate! It’s wax candy, truly…
