Fresca vs Squirt

This was another evaluation with my sister Elaine, and bro-in-law, Zac.  Elaine and I grew up with limited access to soda and  Saturday nights were “soda night”.  Most times we chose Fresca as our weekly indulgence.  Although Squirt comes in regular and diet, I picked the latter because Fresca is only offered as a diet soda.

Fresca:
Fresca seemed to have particularly big bubbles and had a very nice grapefruit smell.  We all agreed the taste was a nice balance of sweet and tart and seemed “full-bodied” because it actually tasted like fruit and not just artificial sweetener that sometimes diet sodas tend to do.  This was light, refreshing and very grapefruity.

Squirt:

We found this to be more sour tasting than Fresca.  The flavor seemed more muted somehow, but it did smell pretty good.  Zac thought it was very watery and we felt the aspartame was a little too much since it wasn’t offset by much fruit flavor.  It was almost like watery, sour, lemonade (with bubbles) and tasted harsh.

Wrap up:
Even with Elaine and I’s history with Fresca, we really went into this with an open mind and were interested to see if there was another option for this drink but we really felt Squirt wasn’t as good, this was confirmed by Zac too.  This was our evalaution and clearly enough people like Squirt enough to keep it in production, but these really seemed different enough to be able to tell the difference.  Fresca seems to be more balanced and smooth, which (for us) makes it more enjoyable to drink.

Sunkist vs Fanta vs Crush

Orange soda, to me it has a kind of mystique- I don’t know anyone who exclusively drinks orange soda, most people like it yet it seems to be more of a novelty beverage.  Although, I must just not know the right people because orange soda  is sold at every gas station, mini-mart and grocery store so obviously it’s popular with someone.  Crush was actually a little hard to find and I could only find it in glass bottle but there’s nothing wrong with that.  My friends Mark and Sarah sat in for this round, lending their expert tastebuds to evaluate and ponder these drinks of orangey carbonation.

Sunkist:
Right away Mark noticed the strong ultra-sweet orange smell, like orange candy (which it is) and found it to be very pleasant.  Sarah felt it had a slightly weird after-taste, we realised it was because of the rosin, actually listed as “ester of wood rosin”.  It actually wasn’t bad though but after we read the label it seemed to taste even more “rosiny”.  We also thought it had the deepest orange color.

Fanta:
Fanta had the same strong orange smell.  We found it to be the more fizzy and sweeter than Sunkist.  It seemed more artificial and somewhat flatter in flavor.

Crush:
Crush had lighter smell but we found it to be overwhelmingly sweet.  We all agreed this was the most artificial of the three and Ethan described it as “water from a pool”.  This lacked any real flavor and was not enjoyable at all.

Wrap up:
We started out thinking these would all taste pretty much the same but it was interesting to find such clear differences.  Sunkist was the most favorable, even with the wood rosin, maybe that’s the secret ingredient that makes this drink the most appealing.   Fanta was the runner up, a bit more tart and corn syrupy but still had a decent orange flavor.  We thought Crush would be the best but were surprised that we couldn’t finish our little tasting cups.  Maybe it had to do with Ethan comparing it to “pool water”, whatever that means but it made sense at the time. We all felt that it lacked orange taste and was way to sweet.  Although, for what it’s worth, I think it has the best logo.

Diet Rite vs TaB

I decided to try two diet colas not popular enough to make it into vending machines.  Admittedly I have been a Tab (or TaB) addict since I was a teenager and people always ask me “WHERE did you get that?  I didn’t even know they still made Tab!”  But it’s easy to find at major supermarkets (here in New England) like Stop & Shop, Shaw’s and Market Basket.  As for Diet Rite, if someone was holding a gun to my head right now I would not be able to remember where I got it.  All I know is it  was at some convenience mart in Framingham and knew I had to grab it when I saw it.

Diet Rite:
One of the first things I noticed just from the bottle was it’s light color.  I almost thought I grabbed an iced tea by accident.  I also noticed that there was very little fizz, if any, when I opened it and there were no bubbles on the side of the cup when I poured it.  It tasted a teeny bit carbonated when I tried it.  Ethan and I both noticed it was extremely sweet and chemicaly tasting,  like someone just dumped a bunch of Nutrasweet into water and barely colored it brown.

Tab:
Tab clearly had more bubbles and of course I will say nice things about it but even Ethan, who does not usually have an appreciation for Tab, said that it has more “body” and liked it better because it wasn’t as sickenly sweet as Diet Rite.  It’s also more cola tasting.  I could go on, I wish I could find  word for what makes Tab’s taste so awesome but maybe it’s just one of those things you have to experience.  I know most people that try it don’t like it but those who do really do.

Wrap up:
I will give Diet Rite a break and say something happened to it in the store to make it flat, but the overwhelmingly sweet “taste” was soapy and unenjoyable and I can’t imagine it any better with more bubbles in it.   Darling Tab was the clear winner (for the record I didn’t like Tab Clear) and I think the only runner up to it *might* be Diet Pepsi, which I may have to re-match in the future.

In case anyone has had either: Diet Rite or TaB?
